Question: 1969 XR7 under hood engine compartment light

#1

Post by Tim Edinger »

Does anybody have a photo of a correctly installed/mounted engine compartment light (standard for XR7)? I have the original light assembly with wiring, but I do not know how to mount it underneath the hood nor do I know where it connects to a lead on the firewall. Any photos or explanations are appreciated. Thank you, Tim

That was a dealer - sold accessory so it could have been mounted almost anywhere. There is no factory wiring for it, the dealer would have to improvise.

Royce,
In 1969 the engine compartment light was standard on the XR7 models and optional on a standard as part of the "courtesy light group" option. That option included rear roof pillar interior lights, map light and lights in the luggage and engine compartment.

As to the original posters question,

The light is supplied power by a glass fused connection at the battery side of the starter relay switch. The harness then runs along the passenger side shock tower to the firewall, across to the bracket that the wiper harness attaches to and then continues up the driver's side where it mounts on the hood.

This is from a 1970 hood, but I believe the 1969 routes the same on the hood. You should have a witness mark where the screw was installed. The wire should be coming out of the larger hole on the driver's side which should also have a grommet.

Oops - sorry I did not realize that it was available in 1969 and later years.

That socket has an internal ball of mercury that completes the circuit to the bulb only when the hood is open. Same for the trunk light. So if the light has power and ground but still doesn't work (as happened on my trunk light) you can get a working used replacement from WCCC.
