1970 Eliminator Blackout Reference Info

For two years the Eliminator roamed the streets looking for prey. Although you could get an engine available from Mercury in the Eliminator, the Cobra Jet 428 and Super Cobra Jet 428 were common under the hood. This was also the only Cougar to get the Boss 302. The Eliminator Registry is maintained by Dave Wyrwas.

Hey hey!

Here are some reference pics and information for the blackout details on the 1970 Cougar Eliminator.
This information is correct to the best of my knowledge. If I have something wrong please let me know and we can investigate further, and correct / update the information here.

1970 Eliminator Exterior Blackout Summary
------------------

1970 Eliminator Black Trim
- Headlight Grilles
- Hood Nose Grille
- Rock Guard (behind front bumper / below headlights) *underside is red oxide
- Rear Tail Light Panel (behind the tail light housings)
- Tail Light Bezels

A good paint choice for these items is SEM Trim Black (SEM 39143, 20oz Aerosol)

Tail Panel and Tail Light Bezel Blackout

#2

Post by Mike_B_SVT »

Rear / Tail Panel Blackout

A large portion of the tail light panel is blacked out, including the area behind the tail lights and behind the fuel filler door.
- Lower edge of the blackout commonly starts from just below the holes for the bumper bolts.
- Upper edge of the blackout commonly ends at the bottom of the trunk lip, but not including the back face of that lip.
- Left & right edges are black all the way over to the quarter extensions.

Taillight Bezel Blackout

- Tail light bezels are blacked out completely. Original Eliminator pieces were never chromed at all, but were bare potmetal painted black.

Quarter Extension and Rear Trim Blackout

The chrome reverse light bezels and trunk lid chrome trim piece on the 1970 Eliminator received blackout tape decals.
The quarter extensions may or may not have received some blackout paint along the inner edge.
*Notice in this example pic one extension cap has black paint while the other does not. It also appears to have been brushed on.

- The quarter extensions on this unrestored original paint Eliminator do not show any blackout.

Front / Grille Blackout

#3

Post by Mike_B_SVT »

Front / Grille Blackout

- The entire front grille and headlight doors are completely blacked out, including the hood nose grille.
Again, original Eliminator grille pieces and headlight doors were never chromed, they were potmetal painted black.

- Behind the headlights themselves is also blacked out.
1970 Behind Headlight Blackout_#2.jpg

- The fender extension also received blackout paint on the portion that is visible inside the grille.
1970 Fender End Cap Blackout_#3.jpg

- The rock guard panel, located behind the front bumper and below the headlights, is also blacked out.
1970 Rock Guard Blackout_#2.jpg

- Note that the underside of the rock guard panel remained unpainted except for the red oxide primer.

Hood and Fender Trim Accent Paint

My understanding of the painted portion of the chrome hood and fender trim that surrounds the grille area;

- 1970 Cougar Standard and XR-7 have the charcoal metallic accent color.
- 1970 Eliminator has a semi-flat black accent color.

*If you have good pictures of original trim showing the difference, please post them.

Other Blackout Items

Other Blackout Items

While not unique to Eliminators, the following items were also painted black ~ and are commonly missed during restoration!

Rocker Panel Lower Pinch Welds

* It is currently believed that "dark" colored cars did not receive blackout paint on the rocker panel lower pinch welds*
- Painted black the entire length of the rocker panel starting from behind the front wheel / underneath the front fender and continuing to the end of the rear quarter behind the rear wheel.

Engine Bay Firewall Pinch Weld

- Painted black above the pinch weld at the firewall. This blackout was applied underneath the cowl panel and continued up to the lower windshield lip.

In searching for this brand, it appears that they no longer make this. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Chuck

If anyone other than a 3rd grader does it in your driveway with a rattle can then it is over restored and not considered "concours". Great reference pics!

That's funny Don!

But to really get that factory look you need a very disinterested guy, no protective gear at all, cigarette in his mouth, half-assing it on a Friday before quitting time.

K01613A07 appears to be the new code. Krylon seems to now market it as an "industrial" paint. This seems to be readily available online from several vendors.

Looks like there is also a Krylon Semi-Flat black spray paint #5578, but I have no idea how it would compare with original or the #1613. Summit has a page for it, but Google shows other options for purchase.

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/shw-5578

Either of these may be worth a shot if you can get them cheap from your local auto parts store. Unless someone chimes in with other options.

I am restoring the gas door and I need some guidance on original finish of some of the details.

For example. I have the Cougar insert from the gas door removed and it appears that the background (behind the Cougar) should be black while the rest of the frame is chrome?

Thanks in advance,
Chuck
