67 Cougar 289 Engine upgrade GT40p

Hey guys,

Starting to restore my 67 Cougar. First I'd like to ask about the engine upgrade I'm going with my 289 engine.
The engine is at a machine shop. I asked for more horsepower out of my 289. The guy working on it says bring me a head off a 94 explorer GT40P and I can get you over 350 horsepower. Well, the original 289 had headers. From looking at some forums I saw some guys had trouble with putting headers back on to a GT40P 289 upgrade. I told the machine shop to see if the headers will match up with the GT40p head I gave them. It doesn't.
The question is this. Would you just scrap putting headers on? I'm told that if its not over 500 hp its kind of a waist and the headers get in the way of the power steering ( my steering is loose after putting in a new steering pump, before the engine upgrade. So its a problem I know I still have with the car that I've not addressed yet) If no headers on this upgrade what would you recommend?

More to come. But I'll just start there. I'm a new cat so to the cougar world!

Thanks!

Good heads produce a lot more horsepower than headers. Therefore if you've already invested in the heads, I'd say stick with that route and just figure out what kind of manifolds or headers will fit. You can always have custom headers welded up.

Okay I'm a bit confused. I gave them a GT40P head. I do want to use that. So I won't need headers? But look for headers? I'm new so I need to understand what that means. How is the manifold different from the GT40P head I took off the 94 explorer. Baby steps!

I don't know if you can get long tube headers but there are short headers available.
