Faster than a speeding ticket?

Post by R Code » 24 Jan 2018, 10:16

Lotus CEO Jean-Marc Gales was clocked at 102 mph (70 zone) near the Co.'s U.K. HQ. He was facing a 1 yr. loss of license/fine, due in part to prior violations (including doing 96 in the same spot 4 years ago). Gales' counsel successfully played the "work" angle & argued for a 30-day suspension.

Is the U.S. as harsh with that type of violation? (asking for a friend)

A few years ago I was caught doing 104 through Junction, Texas in my Porsche 996 on a trip from Houston to El Paso. It was a $250 fine. Of course, the speed limit there is 85 mph.

I got clocked doing 95 in a 25 mph zone with expired plates when I was 16 yrs. All I got was a warning.

The other responding officer ran a trap line for fox on our farm. "I know your dad wouldn't want to be bothered with this so take it easy the rest of the way home and renew that plate" :D

I've heard that over 100 mph is a felony and you'll get arrested on the spot and have your car impounded / license suspended. Not sure how true that is, probably depends on what state you're in & other factors.

Only speeding ticket I've gotten so far was in my Miata coming home at about 1 a.m. after a Black Sabbath concert. I had been doing about 95 shortly before, but he clocked me at like 87 if I remember right. Since there are different fines for different brackets of speeding (1-10 over, 11-20 over, 21-30 over 30+ over), he gave me a slight break by putting me in the lower bracket than what I should have been in. And then my insurance went up. :wall:

So tempting to speed on an empty, straight highway, but ultimately not worth it. (Gotta find those abandoned back roads  )

In BC Canada 40km over the speed limit (25mph?) Gets your car impounded and licence suspended alomg eith other fines. So doing 85 mph in a 60 mph zone could get you in major trouble

Minnesota doubles the fine if speeding more than 20mph over the limit. If speed in excess of 100mph - license revoked for 6 months. This is for speed only. You'd probably get charged with reckless driving too.

Reminds me of the exotic car club that made the news a year or two ago--Lamborghini, Maserati, McLaren etc. making I-394 in Minneapolis a race course. https://www.twincities.com/2016/04/25/e ... -12-cited/

98 in a 55 in 1980-something.......clocked me on the deceleration.......I got "You better tell your dad about this before I do!!!"......Dad was Tulsa PD at the time......got grounded for quite a while for that one., I learned it from him.

MA has a thing they call "driving to endanger". They check that box if the alleged offense is considered particularly egregious (speeding over a certain margin, reckless, DUI, etc.), which elevates the offense to a civil matter.

MA, sucks, period. Last year, my wife backed into a neighbors car by my daughters house. I offered to pay for all the damage based on THEIR estimate and any shop they chose. Nope, we'd feel better going through the insurance company. Fine, I had no argument. Long story short, My premium DOUBLED and will remain there for 3 years. Then another 3 years of "probation". Keep in mind, prior to this incident, we both had drivers scores of "99" which is the best possible. I have no bones regarding fault, but SIX YEARS on your record? Wow, talk about out of control. No monopoly here......

Back to looking at Florida properties, where I foolishly moved from.

I'm by no means the right person for checking laws on speeding. I got caught at 140 in a 55 and got a verbal. Those days are long gone.
I recall hearing that Texas changed its laws with regards to speeding 25+ over in a given limit - mandatory tow and loss of license. This might be above a certain base speed limit...
But one place I have heard you don't want to be over the speed limit is Virginia. This story is worth reading: https://jalopnik.com/never-speed-in-vir ... 1613604053
