New Wheels...now what size tires?

Post by drewk86 » 25 Dec 2017, 17:12

I received some 15x8 American Racing wheels for Christmas. They have a 4.5 backspacing. From what I've read 225/60 should fit without issue. But I'd really like to run as wide of a tire as possible. I've seen some people run 235/60 out front and 245/60 in the back. Would these sizes cause any issues? I'd love to fit a 275 out back but don't think they'd work with the backspacing.

Edit: The Cougar is a 68.

Thanks

I have the exact same question for my '68 Cougar Coupe. Will be following along and really appreciate the help - thanks!

When I purchased my Cougar it had 235/60 upfront and 275/60 in back. The car also had air shocks at that time. IMHO the 235/60's fit but looked too large in the front and the 275/60's would rub even with the air shocks if you hit too large a dip/bump in the road. I currently have 215/60 upfront and 255/60's in the rear without air shocks. The 255's still rub occasionally so my next set I'll downsize to 245/60's and will probably get a slightly taller 215/70 for the fronts. If you search tire size there are other threads on here with more opinions on this subject.

Following as well, wondering if I can get away with 245/60 rears on my 68.

Get a general idea of what size tire you want to run. Then hunt up a junk tire and have it mounted. Put it on the car and cock it in the driveway and turn the wheels and then you'll know for sure.
Note-when the weight is off the front end while mounting the front wheel it's normal for the tire's inner sidewall to perhaps rub the upper ball joint. Set the car on the ground and then look for your clearance.

Well after reading other posts I think I should be able to get away with 245/60 on the rear and some 235/60 on the front. Now time to shop for tires.

Wait a minute-On our '69 I trial fitted a wheel and tire off one of our '69 Cyclones i.e. a 15X8 w/4 1/4" b.s. w/a 235-60-15 and it was too close for my comfort when testing in the driveway and going across a dip in the road above a creek. In fact at a good speed the tire would've caught the front of the wheel well in a turn due to flex. Then I mounted a new 225-60 and it probably would've caught on the opening. No big deal as I really needed a new spare tire anyway.
As I've suggested before mount up a junk tire and trial fit it. Realize too no two cars of the same model are exactly alike due to production tolerances.
