When is a GT NOT a GT ????

#1

Post by bob hess » 01 Dec 2017, 21:49

Question : In 67" was it possible to have ordered a 390 , 4v , 4speed , 8in. rear ( didn't GT's only come with 9in.rears ) and have it come WITHOUT the GT badging ?
I was told ( by the guy that was trying to sell it ....... So he might have a bias , you might say ) Ford offered this combo BEFORE offering it as a "Package" / GT- Package , so that's why it didn't have the GT badging . If so , this would have had to be a very early car ? How early ? And would that make it worth more then the 390 /GT's after it ? It needs sooooooo much work ( $5- 8,000 just in wielding alone ) . He side it's # matching , and running . But the rusted sub frame has me VERY concerned it,s just a poor investment . ( I do a lot of my own work , but that kind of wielding calls for a pro and a frame shop ) .

You could get the 390 4V with a 4 speed and a 9" rear and it would NOT have to be a GT. It didn't matter when you ordered it. You could not get the 8" rear with a 390 in any event.

Here is a great article that explains the 6.5 Litre option as compared to the GT option.
http://www.cougarclub.org/cougar-gt.htm
As Bill stated both have the 9” rear end. My black 67 is a 6.5 Litre non GT 390 Cougar.

The first GT was a very low VIN. I do not recall exactly but was about 7F91S500047. Jim Pinkerton has the door tag from it.

Neal you’re close on the Vin. Cougar VIN 7F91S500041 is the first production GT. It was converted to a race car and this is what it looks like today.

I know the Vin wound say what engine it came with . But not if it was a GT or not ? Only a MR would list rear , trans, trim ( GT, GTE etc. ) ??

The door data tag if correct would list the rear axle ratio, the trans, the trim, but not the GT option. Some but apparently not all GTs will have a buck tag with the letters GT.

My car is a 67 standard cougar with 390, 4spd, 9inch, PS, PDB, AC. Not a GT has the 6.5 emblem. All confirmed by a MR

And I have the tail lights from the first GT mounted on a board, given to me by Jim.
It used to light up and go through a sequence of right and left turns and brake light applications, but the company that made the software is out of business, so I can't get it to work. I am going to look into some other options to get it working again and mount it in my shop.
