1968 Cougar GT 390 4 Speed Clutch Pedal Spring/Clutch Recommendations

#1

Post by RASSAN68 » 10 May 2019, 09:20

I am getting ready to install a 390 (350 HP) and top-loader 4 speed into my car.
If I go to a Diaphragm clutch, do I need to take off the Spring on the clutch pedal.

Also, does any one have recommendation on a clutch kit and supplier.

I have always removed the monster pedal spring (under dash) & replaced it w/ a much smaller spring. This help make the new clutch feel like Hyd. Only way to go!

Nothing special. Just find one that is strong enough to return pedal up. Dorman has a package of springs. Also use the one for the EQ bar to firewall return from "factory" can't remember if it was yellow or blue

Regarding clutch kit, resist marketing hype and just stick with a simple diaphragm style from a reputable brand like LUK, Valeo or other OEM brand.

A traditional spring hub friction disc is all you need - metallic, puck style or Kevlar discs are for race use.

Light pedal and smooth, chatter free engagement is what you're after.
