Never ever send anyone money up front.
wrong... Lots of solid sellers out there who are legit, I have sent hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years to folks all over the world. The last one was a facebook ad for a 1970 eliminator cluster in Asia. Pictures followed up with a phone call and then trust your gut. Been doing this for 30 years and scams are rare if you use common sense. The above scenario instantly makes me think it is too good to be true but again, go with your gut.

That's a bummer Chuck. Two things come to mind. First is I live in AZ but my phone numbers will lead you to CO. Mobile phones change the area code thing so it is possible he is in New Mexico with a NV phone. The second thing is having lived in CO and having property North of Taos I know there is little to nothing "a long ways North of Taos" that is in NM. You go North of Taos and you'll quickly be in CO. In all my years of buying on the internet I was scammed out of $80 on a purchase made through eBay, money paid and product never delivered and contact info vanished. What method did you use to send the money?

This phone number traced to Battle Mountain, NV which fit the narrative. What did NOT fit was that he told me he lived in New Mexico a long ways north of Taos. The phone number traced to Battle Mountain, NV and NOT to New Mexico.

I'm not saying that this was a scam but that sure is a slow freight truck, still not here yet! ;)

Chuck

PS I have not bothered to call that number as it was probably a throw-away phone.

Seems to me he went with his gut. And now he's out a pile of money. Scams aren't rare and this one should have been obvious, they all follow a pattern.

And I've sent plenty of people money up front. But it's always in a way that I have some recourse. But what do I know.

Like I said, pictures... If they claim they cannot, I ask them if they know anyone with a smart phone? Kind of hard to dodge that one! Here is one example of sending a stranger money on a story that was too good to be true... This 69 CJ rag was listed here on this forum for $15k obo, no title. I was caller number 10 or so but everyone else was transfixed on OBO and worried about sending money to a stranger. I told him he was selling it too cheap but I would be happy to pay his full asking price, look the other way on the lost title and paypal a $500 deposit while we spoke over the phone. Very glad I did...

I consider $400.00 a single pull on a slot machine, not a pile of money. The payoff would have been tremendous.

Still need power steering everything for 1970 Eliminator Cobra Jet. It had been removed by dealer before I bought the car as a demonstrator. Has never had PS since 1970 that I know of.
