If you have the time and inclination you can make the gauges read fairly close to accurate. The sender is a negative coefficient thermistor. As it heats up the resistance goes down. You can prove this to yourself by touching the wire that goes to the sender to ground and seeing the gauge peg on hot....

I recall that the Cougar is larger on the gold XR7-G version and even then there were some in pewter finish.

Before you go any further, check the timing and make sure it is correct. Verify that you don't have external vacuum leaks, and in particular confirm that the vacuum advance is working. It's a real dilemma. I want to make it relatively easy to get an account so I don't lock out legitimate users, but difficult enough to keep the spammers out. I may change up the questions and see if I can keep them out.

Did you recently change out the solenoid? The prove out lead should be on the starter side not the battery side.

I rebuild these. I just bought some cores from another Cougar enthusiast. I believe there is one '68 core. I haven't checked it out yet to be sure it can be rebuilt, but it looks good so far. Can't help on the wiring pigtail.
