Not a Cougar problem but looking for thoughts...

Post by badcatt » 25 Jul 2017, 17:40

I was trying to diagnose a noise from my transfer case in my 2006 Ranger XLT 4X4 with the 4.0 and automatic transmission. I was thinking it might be low, so I pulled the "Fill" plug and had a deluge of ATF. I got better then a half quart extra out.
I found where the extra fluid came from; I checked the transmission fluid level. It had at least 2 extra quarts in it. I have everything back to where it should be. I still have the noise I was looking for, but not as pronounced.(and performs much better) I am thinking the switch motor is going bad and hanging up in between 4X4 and rear drive some. So much for using Jippy lube for service.
Any thoughts on how much damage this may have caused over about 2500 miles? This truck has 191,00 miles on it. I replaced the engine at 161,000. It has no leaks, so I don't check levels as often as I should have. My bad...

That does not look good in the picture. Maybe the color is off but it looks brown...

It is not as dark as it looks in the picture, but is darker then it should be. Jippy lube did a full service including the transfer case last fall. I am putting the excess in a container and returning it to them this afternoon.
One to the noise, I have a new control motor coming from RockAuto. It is the same manufacture most have, Dorman. And about half the price. I'll know Saturday if that fixes that problem. I hope I don't have to rebuild/replace it. That gets pricey fast.

Has the transmission ever been rebuilt? If so, how many miles are on it?
