Trunk sheetmetal for 1969 Cougar

#1

Post by drgunn » 11 Jun 2018, 14:52

My Cougar came mid-project, lots of rust replaced. But I see the gas tank from above through the trunk. Is there a panel that goes in the hole above the gas tank? A sort of trunk floor?

No, there is no panel. The tank gets a square piece of wood (pressboard) glued to the top of the tank and is covered by the trunk Matt.

Yea, it is only about 12 x 16 and was glued to the right side of the tank
Probably used to help support the spare tire.

It was originally fairly square to the tank but I moved it to see the ink stamping on the tank. It is secured with a black glue type material that is seen on the tank.

Did the 1970's have that too? I don't remember it on my original '70 Cougar and the current one had the tank replaced prior to my getting it. I would think it would tend to wear through the pad at the edges.

Thanks, I'm not attempting a concours restoration but will look at potential benefits and maybe add it on my '70
