Red GT-E - Mecum Indy - May 2018

The GT-E was only available for a few brief months in 1968. Total production would not have kept the assembly line busy for more than a half day. If you know anything about a GT-E, it is important, and this is the place to share it. The GT-E registry is maintained by Jim Pinkerton.

Gotta say plus 1 on cobrasc427 post. My guess is all Ford and Mercury cars coming down the line in Dearborn in 1968 got screws or rivets. Rule one is the assembly line does not stop. Rule two is...…. Wait for it...…. Yup.... Refer to rule one. Not to mention that the windshield was not installed and the VIN tag was "installed" just prior to the dash as the car went down the line. This was after the headliner and a vinyl top if optioned. More than likely at the very end of the line as the car was finished.

Gotta go with cobrasc427 with and the same Judge Judy quote..... All Ford and Mercury car lines out of Dearborn in 1968 should be notified of this anomaly. It may help them with the authenticity of their cars.

Oh crap, "Where is my rivet gun"!!! "Stop the line"!! "Not"!!!!!!

And then there is the strange case of Dave Hannan's '68 Dearborn built Cougar. The dash VIN tag wasn't attached at all. It was actually just slid under the windshield rubber seal ON TOP of another VIN plate. No rivets, no screws no glue, nothing. The slipped in place VIN tag does match every other VIN on his car. The VIN underneath? It was for a Mustang. Both cars were scheduled for build on the same day. VINs are 8F91C539342 (Cougar) and 8F01C158383 (Mustang) All of this has been documented and verified.

Was digging in some parts this weekend to find some fasteners and came across this vin tag from a 68 Cougar I parted out years ago. It had screws to the vin tag. It was a standard with a three speed.

It kinda amazes me that this anomaly was not verified years ago. How many cars have been suspect due to a screwed on dash plate. Glad this has been pretty much verified by the collection of evidence in this thread. I, for one, doubted the screws in this car. Just when we think we have seen it all, something like this pops up.

And the Lord spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out! Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it.
