Cougar article from 1967

Post by PacificaXR7GT » 18 Sep 2018, 10:05

I was noodling around the web looking for old Cougar race photos when I came across this article posted on a Camaro forum. Not sure if it's been posted before but here it is for anybody who hasn't already seen it.

Anybody know the feature car? 1967 GT with California plate SYP986.

That is a terrific and seldom scene article from the May, 1967 issue of Raceway Magazine, which was the official publication of the late, great Riverside International Raceway in Riverside California. It was also the track that Trans-Am rivals Dan Gurney (Bud Moore Cougar) and Jerry Titus (Shelby Mustang) both considered their home track.

Looks like for the '67 racing season Riverside had three GT equipped Cougars as pace cars and what is really neat is that they were all painted in red and silver team colors!

Though from the non-factory looking pin stripes it looks like they weren't supplied by Mercury that way but were custom painted (by Riverside?).

Would love to know these Cougar's VINs and what became of them.

On a side note, Gurney wasn't available to drive his BME Cougar during the '67 TA race at Riverside so NASCAR champion David Pearson filled in.

Pearson went on the win the race and Ed Leslie finished second for a Cougar 1-2.

The result of which was, that with two races left to go, Mercury led Ford 60 points to 59.

A later edition of Riverside Magazine had great coverage of that race. When I get the time I'll dig out my copy, scan that article and post it here.
