390 motor pics from a 69 needed

#1

Post by Cougar Bill » 15 Mar 2018, 09:06

I just got in a 69 Standard convert w/ a 390 and NO A/C. Due to the poor restoration, almost all the metal has been painted chrome/silver or black. The owner would like it back to original as possible, so I need correct pics of 1969 390 engine bay with out A/C.

Thanks!

There is a S code mustang registry here:

You can probably search for engine shots for a 69,Mustang and Cougar should look similar. Another option is the concourse mustang forum.

Do you have a Marti report for the car? There will be differences in the engine compartment depending on where it was assembled (the car)

Finishes for things like shock tower supports, hood latch support battery tray will be different as will other details outside of the engine compartment. Inspector marks or stickers as well as service decal locations differ also.

Also you will need to know if the car was ordered with the chrome package for the engine. At least for Mustangs it was an extra charge for the chrome valve covers and air cleaner lid.

In general 390 pictures are often difficult to locate since few were left in factory form and allot more attention has been given to its larger brother the CJ

I do not have the Marti yet, Owner does has one.
Car is Detroit built. He has chrome "Mercury" valve covers and a GT air cleaner (no vac door). If you have any pics they can help!

Thanks!

Not sure what a GT air cleaner is. Hopefully not one of those ones where the base has the screen door material in some cut outs. If so you'll be looking for an air cleaner based and possible a lid also since the 67 style air cleaner would not have passed the 69 federal emission standards and was not certified for cars delivered in the US .

Will find and put up some pictures from from unrestored examples and at least of the cars Mustang brother - they were all made at the same location and hopefully that will help

Ok here are some pictures. As mentioned allot of these cars have been played with and things like heat shrouds (specific to 69 only) and S tubes have been removed over the years. Also since you were not specific to when the car was built don't copy other details shown since your car may have been built during a different period. Example would be the cowl finish above the pinchweld - painted engine compartment black or body color.

Three withe the chrome option as mentioned These first three are from another plant as your car so don't consider engine compartment details and sticker placement in you restoration ;)

Someone got carried away with the body and engine compartment paint ::) Don't copy the decal placement - especially the CAUTION FAN ;)

Plenty of service items on this one replaced over the years. Does show some details like the emission/timing decal placement

Hope this helps
