Making functional ram air for 351

Post by 69XR7RestoMod » 04 Feb 2018, 18:37

Has anyone here created a functional ram air setup like the 428 has on a 351w?

What parts would I need? I’ve already got the scoop mounted.

Probably just a seal for the air cleaner base to the hood and a lid just big enough to cover the air filter would be my guess.

Yes it’s been done by Bob on Isabel. Here is the link and a picture. You stated 351 but did not say Cleveland or Windsor. Bob has a Cleveland built to 408 ci.

I missed the w in your post designating Windsor. I’m sure the same type of set up will work regardless of the engine type.

A hole in your hood, some garage door seal, and a lid that leaves the element exposed will work if you don't care how it looks & are OK with always drawing in outside air.

If you want it to function as the factory RA did (only drawing in outside air under full throttle), you'll need the RA air cleaner lid & vacuum-actuated flapper doohickey.

Nice! That looks great. All I need is a base now!

I used a stock 351W-2V base. Initially I used an (expensive) repro snorkel block-off (bought on ebay from Oz). That is what is shown in the picture Steven posted. Later, I removed the block-off, cut the lip from the snorkel cutout and butt welded in a plate made to fit the opening. Much cleaner looking and does not interfere with the garage door weatherstrip hood seal I use on my contraption.
