The starting position is at the 5th screw. That is straight out of the manual. I think you have them too far back. I think the ends may start out already past the bend so they don't have to go around it.

Are you aligning the rear slide with the 5th screw from the front? It sounds like it is too far back or something.

Ken's Cougars has reproduced these. They are really nice. It is very hard to find good used that are not bowed and yellow in color.

The taper head srews mount the motor. The screw and washer you have to remove to used the manual handle sets the tension for the slip clutch.

I would start by looking at the inside of the distributor cap. Look for carbon traces on the two posts that are not firing. Also verify that the rotor doesn't have a terrible wobble issue. Then use a know good plug wire and known good plug to verify that you have spark. I have had more than two out ...
